G. A. Custer (his Life And Times) 11/15/2004
The Life and Times of George A. Custer were filled with excitement, danger and great adventure. His short life has created more myths and controversy than any other American History.
This fantastic book starts with Custer's early life and follows him through The West Point Academy and his exploits during the Civil War as he becomes this country's youngest general.
He becomes second in command of the Seventh Cavalry and moves onto the Great Plains during the Indian Wars.
The officers and men of this classic period are also explored. From the inception of their Regiment until their defeat at the Little Bighorn.
Following the aftermath serious studies were made on the disposition of the dead and collection of the remaining artifacts on the battlefield. Much knowledge has been gained on the structure of the fight, but what keeps it interesting is the mystery; the what ifs, the why not's, that we'll probably never know, yet continue to draw us in to the next observation or theory.
Presented here are many of the personalities of this period that we just can't seem to forget.
The first chapter; "Custer: From Young Cadet to Frontiersman in Buckskin."
The second chapter of the book; "Of Garry Owen in Glory: The Seventh Cavalry's Officer Corps, introduces the men who were the 7th Cavalry Officers who served with Custer at the time of the Battle Little Bighorn. This was certainly the most important and dramatic event to occur while Custer was in command.
The third chapter; "The Enlisted Men of the 7th Cavalry", covers as many of the enlisted men who could be found in photography and mementos.
Chapter Four; "Victors and Vanquished"; Survivors' Sagas", describes the involvement of the other players of the Little Bighorn drama. The chain of command, the scouts, the civilians well as the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians

The chain of command, the scouts, the civilians well as the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians who tell their personal stories of the build up and action that summer day in June, 1876. Concluding with the terrible realization of Custer's defeat. Many officers were killed that day along with Custer but many also survived and lived productive lives; their stories are told.
Chapter Five; "Men with Custer; The Dead Tell their Tale", by Douglas Scott is a present day archaeological postmortem. Through his forensic studies, remains have been identified and now literally have a face.
The last Chapter, "Firearms and Fields of Fire", co-authored by Douglas Scott and Dick Harmon, comes directly from the recovery projects of the early eighties.
Fifteen firearms have been forensically proven to have taken part in the battle. The forensic methodology and all fifteen identified firearms are recorded here.
The story is now told through historic photography and the actual artifacts and weapons of these fascinating times.

Harry Jackson By Pointer Goddard & Abrams 11/8/2004
HARRY JACKSON
Born in Chicago, Jackson ran away from home at fourteen to work as a cowboy in Wyoming. He joined the Marines at eighteen and became the youngest combat artist of World War II. At twenty –two he moved to New York, where he was a student of Rufino Tamayo and Hans Hofmann, a friend of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, and one of the most prominent younger Abstract Expressionist painters. In 1952, at the age of twenty-eight, he began to move beyond what he felt were the limitations of modern abstraction toward a new kind of realism that encompasses an abstract aesthetic.
Since 1958 he has produced a major criticism of peers and critics alike, that has brought him worldwide attention and given him a unique place in the history of modern art.
Jackson’s paintings and sculpture, from the early RANGE BURIAL and STAMPEDE cycle to the recent monument painted bronze of SACAGAWEA, are deeply rooted in the history, landscape, and people of the American West, and in his own experience as a cowboy. But the sources and content of his work are far-ranging, and as an artist he has followed his own path, drawing as much on abstract painting as on the humanist tradition of European art. Merging abstraction and realism, tradition and modernism, painting and sculpture, his work reflects both the epic and the everyday heroism of frontier and cowboy life.

Cowboys & The Trappings of the Old West

Foreword by Roy Rogers
Authors:
Williams Manns & Elizabeth Clair Flood

COWBOY’S & THE TRAPPINGS OF THE OLD WEST is a pictorial celebration with over 550 extraordinary photographs. The cowboy’s dress and trappings set him apart from mere common folk. From the top of his head, with his broad-brimmed Stetson, to the bottom of his feet, in his high heel boots and silver spurs he was unlike anyone the world had ever seen. For the first time, his saddles, chaps, spurs and the tools of his trade are presented in a carefully crafted portrait. Tribute is given to the artisans and craftsmen who fashioned the cowboy’s unique outfit.
His "rootin’ tootin’ tougher-than-twang- leather image is presented from simple cowpuncher to his rise to icon status. Through rare with many never-before-published photos, the history of the cowboy is traced from the cattle trails and ranches of the Old West to the glory of the Wild West show and rodeo arena. The myth of the cowboy is explored from dime novel yarns to the Hollywood heroes such as Tom Mix and Buck Jones, along with TV cowboys like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Hopalong Cassidy.
Cowgirls and calico queens are included as exciting companions to our old-time cowpokes. The story of the cowgirl is explored from her ranch-hand days to her recognition as Wild West show performer and rodeo star.
Her equipment is illustrated in beautiful color photographs and historic images.
This is an important book for any cowboy enthusiast or student of Western Americana.
